What Is Sodding Toronto?

Sodding, also known as sod installation or lawn installation, is the most reliable and quickest way of establishing a new lawn. Sod is the grass cut from a well-established field of grass that is placed at other locations. This sod covers the soil underneath completely and minimizes water evaporation and soil erosion.

At Landscape Toronto, we obtain 12-14 months old sod from local farms, – it needs to be mature enough to ensure that the pieces are held together properly. We also ensure that sod is thinly cut, which allows it to root faster in the new location.

Sodding Installation overview

Benefits of Sodding Your Lawn

  • Instant lawn. Sodding in Toronto can instantly transform your garden or backyard, offering a lush rug of grass as soon as it is laid down. Seeding, on the other hand, often leads to a patchy appearance and takes longer to grow.
  • Can be installed almost any time. As opposed to seeding, sod can be installed almost anytime, as long as the ground isn’t frozen. For Toronto’s climate, this usually means from mid-April through the end of November.
  • Erosion control. New sod installation stabilizes the soil underneath and protects it from erosion. As a result, your backyard will be protected from water runoff and soil loss.
  • Long-term investment. Sodding in Toronto not only improves your home’s curb appeal and functionality but also elevates its value in the long term.
  • Weed resistance. High-quality sod ensures a dense turf that suppresses weed growth and reduces the need for chemical treatments in the future.

What to Expect

Sod Installation Service by Landscape Toronto

Use of High-Quality Soil

Unlike other landscaping companies in Toronto, we use only the best quality soil available on the market. Our most commonly used soil is a triple mix soil, consisting of ⅓ soil, ⅓ compost, and ⅓ peat moss. This special mix allows us to ensure the growth of healthy sod, quickly and reliably.

As a higher-end alternative, we may use the Gro-Max soil, known for its optimal pH, water retention abilities, and high porosity, which makes it an excellent alternative to the triple mix.

Sod Delivery Straight to Your Door

When you choose to work with us for sod installation in Toronto, you won’t have to worry about picking up and delivering the sod yourself. As part of our sodding services, we will deliver fresh sod straight to your house - at no additional charge, of course. We will then carefully unroll the sod sheet and install it atop the soil, completing the job according to the industry standards.

Clean Yard After Sod Installation

We will leave your property spotless, making sure that our sod installation process is completely hassle-free for you and your family. We will properly dispose of all the materials and garbage post-installation, using only eco-friendly methods to get rid of the old sod. You will be able to enjoy your yard the moment we leave your property, with no additional cleanup required on your side.

Step by step

Our Sod Installation Process

1

Evaluating the landscaping

Before we can begin sod installation, we will visit your property and conduct a thorough evaluation of the existing landscaping. This includes checking the condition of the soil, taking necessary measurements, and removing any weeds and grubs.

2

Removing the old sod

The old sod can be removed with a commercial-grade sod cutter - a special machine with a sharp blade, which is inserted into the turf. This blade can effectively peel off up to 3 inches of sod with existing grass roots, preparing the soil for future new sod installation.

3

Adding topsoil & leveling

Removing the old sod involves more than just taking it out. Once the old sod is uprooted, we will check the condition of the soil underneath. If needed, we will remove old soil and replace it with new one. In case we decide to keep the existing soil, we will apply high-quality fertilizer to prepare the soil for sod installation.

4

Rolling & leveling the area

When it comes to sod installation in Toronto, it is crucial to ensure that the land slopes correctly to avoid any dry patches or water puddles after rainfall. To level the area, we will use a sod roller - a heavy drum filled with water that is pushed across the lawn to help the sod make good contact with the soil once it is installed.

5

Laying sod

Once the soil is evened out with a roller, the area is ready for sodding. During this step, our landscaping professionals will expertly lay the grass sod, paying close attention to the trees, edges, and flower beds within your yard. We will cut the sod carefully around these elements, making sure that the lawn looks neat and appealing.

6

Leveling the new grass

Finally, we will go over the new sod with a roller one more time to remove air pockets under the sod strips, level the sod and ensure that it roots properly on top of the soil. If air pockets are not removed, they can potentially cause the death of the root system, causing dead spots on the lawn surface. This final rolling also prevents unwanted grubs and weeds from growing and ensures your new sod’s longevity.

7

Watering the new lawn

Of course, watering is an essential part of maintaining a healthy lawn. We will explain in detail how to take care of the new sodded lawn and provide you with the recommended watering schedule.

8

Cleaning up after sod installation

Finally, we will clean up after ourselves, leaving your home nice and neat. We will dispose of all post-installation garbage and materials, at no additional cost.

The cost to lay sod in Toronto can vary depending on the following factors:

  • Grading issues. Any uneven areas or other grading issues will need to be addressed prior to sod installation, – this may result in additional costs.
