City of Toronto Tree Planting Regulations

At Landscape Toronto, we fully support Toronto’s goal to expand our city’s tree canopy. Trees create ecosystems, sequester carbon, provide oxygen, and filter out some pollutants from the air we breathe. For every tree removed under the authorization of the City of Toronto, you must replant another one, – except when a request to pay instead has been approved.

If you need help replanting a tree, or require assistance with choosing the right species, preparing the site, or tree aftercare, get in touch.

What we do

Our Canada Tree Planting Services

As Toronto’s tree-planting specialists, we offer both residential and commercial tree-planting services for residents of the City of Toronto and the rest of the Greater Toronto Area.

Tree Planting for Homeowners

Trees provide many benefits for your residential property. Planting trees in your yard will make your garden more beautiful, increase your home’s curb appeal, and boost your property’s resale value. Indeed, homes with lush greenery and well-maintained trees have much higher values than those with empty yards.

Benefits of Residential Tree Planting

  • Trees improve the air you breathe. Trees absorb harmful gasses from the atmosphere, including carbon dioxide, airborne ammonia, and more. At the same time, they produce oxygen, thus improving the quality of the air you breathe.
  • Trees protect your yard. Strategically planting trees around your yard can create a natural barrier from strong winds, while also limiting water accumulation during storms and minimizing natural soil erosion.
  • Trees support ecosystems. Trees serve as an important natural environment for a variety of wildlife species, thus supporting ecosystems even within urban environments like the City of Toronto.
  • Trees help you save. Trees shelter your home from rain, wind, and sun. As such, planting trees around your house can help to reduce your utility costs by up to 30%!
  • Trees increase property values. Planting trees around your property can improve the curb appeal of your home, thus increasing your property value.

Tree Planting for Businesses

In addition to residential tree planting in Toronto, we also offer tree planting services to local businesses and for other commercial applications. We have worked on several large-scale tree-planting projects for government and commercial clients and are ready to give your place of business an upgrade by planting new trees outside.

Benefits of Commercial Tree Planting

  • Trees improve the aesthetics of your business location. Without a doubt, a carefully planned and executed landscaping plan can make your business space look more beautiful and inviting for potential customers.
  • Trees prolong the life of the pavement. Trees planted around city streets can prolong the life of the pavement, while also reducing the glare for drivers and pedestrians at the same time.
  • Trees contribute to safe commuting. Trees are shown to reduce stress levels in drivers, which, in turn, contributes to safer and more enjoyable commuting.
  • Trees help you save. Trees shelter your home from rain, wind, and sun. As such, planting trees around your house can help to reduce your utility costs by up to 30%!
  • Trees filter pollutants. A single line of trees planted along a city street or highway can help to remove up to 60% of air-borne pollutants! Plus, trees absorb as much as 50% of noise pollution..

What works best

Choosing the Right Tree Species

Choosing the right tree species can be a tricky decision. We can plant any tree you want, but you should still put some thought into selecting the right species, as this can make or break the outcome of your landscaping project.

Factors to Consider When Choosing Newly Planted Trees
Some factors worth considering when choosing which tree to plant are:

Planting Site

Consider where you are planning to plant your tree. If you want to plant the tree right next to your house, a sprawling tree will not be an optimal choice, - instead, you should opt for species that will grow straight up.

Your Objective

Your tree choice should also reflect your objective. Are you planting a tree for privacy purposes, to protect your yard from the elements, or simply for aesthetics?

Mature Tree Size

Keep in mind how your chosen tree will look after it matures, including its size, shape, and height. Find out whether that particular species thrives when planted next to other trees or when left on its own.

Native Trees

We always recommend planting tree species native to Southern Ontario ecosystems, as native plants have the highest chances of thriving after being planted.

Popular Native Trees in Toronto & Ontario

Some popular species for tree planting in Canada include:

Deciduous Trees

  • Red Maple
  • Sugar Maple
  • Silver Maples
  • Black Oak
  • Red Oak
  • White Birch
  • White Ash
  • Sycamore

Evergreen Trees
  • Eastern White Cedar
  • Black Spruce

Step by step

Tree Planting in Toronto: Our Process

1

Choosing the Planting Site

The key part of planting a tree is to match the tree to its planting site. The characteristics of your property will determine which trees will thrive in that particular location. Even within the limits of the City of Toronto, we encounter a variety of microclimates affected by buildings, pavement, topography, and other surroundings.

Additionally, we will make sure that the tree is not being planted near a power line or above cables or wires buried underneath the property.

2

Choosing Which Tree to Plant

Choosing the right tree to plant on your property is not easy, - but it is the most important step in ensuring the success of your tree-planting project. At Landscape Toronto, we have almost every tree you can think of, and we will be happy to make recommendations on what type of tree is best suited for you and your property.

It is recommended to select a species that will adapt to the specific features of the planting site, - choosing a native species will often increase the chances of your tree thriving.

3

Tree Planting in Toronto

Once the tree planting site and the tree species are finalized, we can help you prepare the site and plant the tree on your property. We always advise our clients to let us help them find a premium tree from one of our trusted suppliers, - but we can also plant the tree you already have.

4

Maintenance of the Trees Planted

Once the tree is planted, we will provide recommendations on the proper way to take care of it: how much water it will need, when and how frequently it needs to be watered, and how and when it should be fertilized. Note that for the first years after a tree has been planted, most of its energy will go into establishing its root system, - so don’t expect your new tree to grow quickly.

Planting at the right time

The Best Time to Plant Trees in Toronto

Without a doubt, the best time to plant a tree in Toronto is during early spring. When planted during this time, the tree will have enough time to establish its roots before winter hits, – plus there will be sufficient rainfall to keep the tree well watered at all times.

At Landscape Toronto, we advise against planting trees in the summer, as a freshly planted tree might not cope well with summer heat. Ideally, a young tree should be planted early, before it grows any foliage.

We love our clients and they love us

Whether a homeowner or property manager, all of our clients get the same dedication and respect they deserve.
